periwinkle polish chipped on her nails
illuminates the night
and her wide eyes mock the full moon
batting lashes compliment the soft breeze
when it brushes her cheek with a kiss
little toes curl into soft earth
as her soles hug the deep green blades
and when a raindrop lands gently on her cheek
it falls calmly into rhythm with the salty trail to her chin

an ode to you:
like when your family makes fun of you
and how your cheeks turn red
and your eyes flick in my direction
and how you think im laughing at you
but under the table
the dog is humping my leg
like how my head fits in the curve of your neck
and when i can hear your voice echoing in your chest
deep like my brothers could have been
like it never would have been
like how my feet look in your shoes
or when you take off your shirt
like when you roll down all the windows
and dont wipe the mist from your windshield
like how mad you get when their are cyclists on the road
like the look on your face when you got your draft number
or the sound of us on your leather couch
whenever we move
like when i fight with my sisters
or you fight with yours
and how they have a brother
but you dont
like when i walked in on you in the bathroom
or how you borrowed your uncles shoes
like when my mom yelled at us when we were sitting in your car
like when i thought you’d never call
and like the way i felt when you did
like how your dad eats butter pecan ice cream
like when you picked the fuzz off my socks
or held my hand under the dinner table
like when you mumble and say “nevermind”
but how i already heard what you said
and when you eat the apple core
and throw away the stem
like when we dont finish movies
or when i try to teach you card games
like when we sat on the stairs at that big party
and how people kept saying “excuse me” to get past
like when you shake my dad’s hand
and how you laugh at his jokes
like when you tell the same story
or just tell it like i wasnt there
like how small my hand looks in yours
and the way you mimic my laugh
like the painkillers we took after our wisdom teeth
and the ice cream cake you left in my freezer
its like running to the shower on a cold morning
and picking hitchhikers from the cuff of my jeans
